The Texas Property Tax Protest Process

In Texas, property owners have the right to protest their appraised value every year. Appraisal districts such as HCAD, FBCAD, MCAD, GCAD, and BCAD use mass appraisal methods to estimate property values, but these methods can overlook important details about individual properties. The protest process allows you to present evidence that your property's assessed value is too high.

After receiving your annual notice of appraised value, you file a protest with the relevant appraisal district. Your case is then heard by the Appraisal Review Board (ARB), an independent panel that reviews the evidence and makes a determination. If the ARB ruling is unsatisfactory, additional options exist including binding arbitration and judicial appeal.

Rainbolt & Co handles the entire process on your behalf—filing the protest, gathering comparable sales and market evidence, preparing your case, and attending the hearing as your authorized representative.
